What is a Risk Assessment?
In essence, a risk assessment involves the comprehensive process of identifying and analyzing potential events that could adversely affect individuals, assets, or the environment. It also entails making informed judgments about the tolerability of these risks based on a thorough risk analysis.

Why You Need a Risk Assessment?
As an employer, it is not only a legal obligation but also a fundamental responsibility to safeguard your employees and others from potential harm. The law mandates conducting a 'suitable and sufficient assessment' of risks related to both the health and safety of your employees and any risks posed to individuals not under your employment but affected by your work. Governed by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, your minimum obligation involves:
-
Identifying hazards,
-
Evaluating the likelihood and severity of potential harm (the risk),
-
Taking decisive actions to either eliminate the hazard or, if not feasible, control the risk.
Risk assessment stands as a crucial component within the broader framework of managing and controlling risks in your workplace.

Part 1 of the RR(FS)O identifies general duties, including that of the "responsible person", "general fire practices" and premises which it is applicable to.
Part 2, Articles 8-22B, covers in detail the on-going requirements, including specifically in Article 9 the need to carry out a risk assessment.
As the responsible person you must carry out and regularly review a fire risk assessment of the premises. This will identify what you need to do to prevent fire and keep people safe.

The law requires businesses with five or more employees to establish a written health and safety policy - this policy outlines your approach and designates responsibilities within your organisation.
Every business, regardless of size, is mandated by law to have a health and safety policy. This policy serves as a comprehensive guide to your overall approach, detailing how you, as an employer, will effectively manage health and safety.
Specifically, if you have five or more employees, the policy must be documented. While not obligatory for businesses with fewer than five employees, documenting your approach is beneficial for clarity and proactive management.
